memory upgrade

    Hi all,

    I want to upgrade my memory I have an emachines desktop model 5240
    with a standard 512 MB dual channel memory installed.I would like some info as what I need to install I can have a max of 4GB,at the moment I have 4 banks two of which are used ( banks 2 and 4 are empty can I just use one of them with a 1GB upgrade ) and if I want to put another 1GB in later will it cause any probs gratefull for any feed back or help on this please I'm not a genius on pc's but will listen and learn from more experienced people on here.

    I don't think adding more memory will do any harm. All modern systems will be able to use new memory as soon as it becomes available.
    Please be aware though that 32-bit systems have "issues" with >3Gb memory. If you're using 32-bit, there is no point to have more than 3Gb.

    I thank you for your reply much appreciated, will upgrade by 1GB think that will solve many things the trouble with me is I forget to delete stuff an it just mounts up..........then freeze ups happen

    I would advise you to switch from Windows to Linux. This system has architecture which does not "mount up" all memory requirements.
    You can read reviews of different Linux distros in my blog and decide which one to try... and then install.

    Hi, I have a Toshiba Equium A100-027, 2 banks of 1, ram slots 512MB.I wish to upgrade just one slot from 512 to 1GB is this possible the ram now is 200pin 1.8v DDR2 PC2-4200 SoDimm,can you give me the right spec for a 1GB card bought one in comp market and it dont work hope you can help..
