Tata Photon Prepaid Review

by Sadik on 21/03/10 at 12:43 pm

Tata photon has recently launched prepaid internet connection for their High Speed Broadband data card. Now I do have an excellent wired broadband internet connection at home (again from Tata indicom broadband) but still I went ahead and bought one for my laptop. Now I am usually carrying my laptop around and it made sense to me to have broadband internet access on the go.

The current price is Rs. 2400 which I feel is reasonable given that it was costing 3500 Rs just a month ago. Also they gave me 1 GB of free data transfer which was good that I din’t have to make another immediate expense on purchasing data transfer balance.

The installation of the software that comes with the Tata photon is pretty simple and auto-starts as soon as you plug the USB device in your USB slot. The data card I had got came from Huawei. The other option I had was of Haier. However having used a Huawei mobile before, I preferred Huawei. Once the software called “Huawei Access Manager” was succesfully installed, I needed to create a new connection profile. Here’s how to do it:

  1. Double click on Huawei Access Manager to start the program.
  2. Click on Tools–>Options
  3. In the Options Window, click on Network Settings
  4. Click on New
  5. Give a Name for this connection profile, for example, Photon
  6. Leave the Default Access Number untouched.
  7. Enter the Photon phone number as 9xxxxxxxxx@domain as your username. You should get this data from the dealer when you purchase the device. For example here in Kolkata, I got 9xxxxxxxxx@photon.ttsl.in
  8. Enter the password that you should have got from the dealer. The default is internet which should work in most cases.
  9. Click on Save and optionally click on set as default.

There you go you are done. Once the profile is saved, all I have to do is plugin the device, double click Huawei Access Manager on my desktop and Click on connect. I got decent speeds on the road here at kolkata and when I was visiting Hyderabad.

Ok, a word about why I chose Prepaid over Postpaid. In postpaid, I have to select a plan before month end for the next month from options of Rs 500, Rs 650 or Rs 750 each giving me .5, 1 and 2 GB data transfer respectively. So if I take a postpaid connection, I absolutely HAVE TO PAY minimum of Rs 500 every month whether I use photon or not. If I don’t pay a bill for a month, TADA! my connection gets cut.

Now compare that with prepaid, where I have options of Rs. 200, Rs. 500, Rs. 700 and Rs. 850 for 250 MB, 650 MB, 1 GB  and 2 GB respectively all for a validity of 30 days. But here’s the bumper prize, you have a grace period of 6 months (5 months after initial 30 days) for any prepaid card. So if I recharge by Rs 850 for 2 GB and then don’t recharge for another 5 months, my connection doesn’t get cut. And if I recharge by a minimum of Rs. 200 my balance left keeps getting added over. So for someone like me, who already has a wired internet connection at home and uses Photon for mobile internet on the road, i can get away with a minimum of Rs. 200 every month because I don’t need too much data transfer!

Another advantage of Prepaid over Postpaid is that unlike postpaid, if you over use your data transfer limit, you just won’t be able to connect anymore.  I have a colleague who one fine day, received a bill of Rs 5000 on his photon postpaid connection because he had forgotten to check how much he was using and photon just kept on adding to his bill after his balance had run out.

Anyways, these were my thoughts and review of it. I feel the Photon Data card is a great product if you spend too much time roaming from place to place and need to remain connected on good speeds.  But in my opinion on the long run, the prepaid connection would prove cheaper and more practical to you. Let me know your thoughts.

    Hi Sadiq ...
Just browsing through photon+ (prepaid) reviews and come across with this blog, so felt like sharing with you about my dilema's on to a decision of buying it or not as, i am little afraid about the connectivity which is been told by tata's executive themselfs but on the same hand they were intended to push me a postpaid instead of prepaid..
The only reason why i wanted to go for a prepaid is of its nominal recharge values starting from Inr 200. as i am already using a wired internet so this is just like a stand by for me in case my wired net gets down so i would be having access to the Internet by getting it recharge.

I am a resident of delhi/ncr region, would you please put light on the connectivity with prepaid tata photon + in case you have any idea?
  • There is absolutely no issue with Tata Photon Prepaid connectivity and there is absolutely no difference between Prepaid and Postpaid from connection point of view. The reason tata people try to push Postpaid is because it ensures more revenue for the company and possibly more commission for the sales man.

If you want a spare backup internet connection, I suggest you take a Prepaid connection. Tell the tata person that either you will take a prepaid connection or won't take one at all. Even when I had gone to buy they tried to push Postpaid to me and I said, either I will take prepaid or I won't take any connection so finally they relented.

I have got a new experience wherein the balance displayed in the SMS was incorrect. When I recharged with 2 GB, without any usage the balance displayed in SMS is 1477MB. I think the previous months usage was deducted. This is a strange thing for me. I was expecting that the connection will be separate for each month's recharge.

Hi Sadik a very good find indeed but I need to know if the extra balance of the previous recharge STAYS beyond the validity date. I hope the balance does not automatically expires on reaching the expiry date. Have you personally observed that that balance (the unused value) remains for the period beyond the date of expiration.
  • Hi Priya,

Yes I have personally experienced both.

    1. I actually have two photon datacards with me. One for me and one for someone else. I bought the first one in March but at the end of 30 days did not recharge. I had some balance left which got expired because I did not recharge within the validity period.

    2. The second photon prepaid card that I have, having learned my lesson, I recharged before the 30 days ran out and in this case the leftover balance got added.
  • Yeah man...as you said, the only option is to call their customer care. I called them up yesterday. The guy who picked up told me that they have a facility of sms alert for balance enquiry. They told me that its a free service and they will send sms three times a day letting me know about my balance. So they noted my cell phone number down but its been almost 24 hours, I haven't received a single sms. Will call the CC again in the evening. Will let you know if I get anything positive.
  • Yesterday again called up customercare. Again they noted my number down for the sms intimation of prepaid photon balance. But till now I haven't received any sms yet. Sadik, if you get time, can you call the cc up and ask them about this facility. You also can get it activated. Waiting for your response.
  • The SMS intimation facility, I haven't heard working for anyone. The last time I had asked, the call center guy quite frankly told me that we have as of now no facility other than from the customer care no. to find the balance. Still, I will call them up again and see if they have anything new.
  • Hey Sadik, just now received the sms also. This was the first sms. Lets see how often they send the sms.
  • Hi... yes I checked out their Usage Details facility. I updated this post and wrote a post on how to check usage details also. Still the website is far from satisfactory. Thanks for letting me know. I haven't received and SMS though on my alternate number.
  • Ok...I have an update. Yesterday I was browsing through the Tata Indicom Forums and there I found many people asking for the balance enquiry. Each and every such topic was answered with the same reply about going to the Tata Indicom website and register as a New User...then selecting Prepaid and so on.Most of the users replied back saying that they couldn't register in the site and that the Photon+ number was saying to be invalid and so. I myself tried the process before and it never worked. But still yesterday I tried it one more time. This time the thing worked. The only thing I did which was different from the last time was I used a different browser ie Chrome. I can now log into their system and check the usage, but the usage stat showing there is pretty vague. Like they are providing just numbers like 2566987. What is this? Is this in bytes or Kilobytes. I presumed that its in bytes coz I have an idea on how much I used my Photon+. Hope this helps.
  • pratitdesai
Rightly compared between Prepaid & Postpaid of Photon +. I too am gonna buy the prepaid @ Rs. 2500/- for the modem which gives me 250mb free i.e. Rs. 200/- & additional 1gb free for the 1st month which you also got.

However, when you say that if you recharges with Rs. 200/- & dont use it, the amount doesnt get carried forward to next month according to Tata Indicom @ Dalhousie.

    Could you please clarify..?
  • See the catch is that you have to recharge before your validity gets over. So for example if I recharge with Rs 200 on 2nd March my validity is till 30 days, that is, 1st of April. So if I don't recharge again before 1st April, my balance does not get carried forward. But if I recharge, say on 30th March before my 30 day validity is over, it gets carried forward.

The catch line is that, balance does not get carried forward if not recharged within validity period.
  • pratitdesai
I still dont get your point.. With Rs. 200 recharge, you get 1 month validity & 250 mb, no talktime. So if you recharge before your validity gets expired, what exactly gets carried forwarded & what extra benefit you draw out of it?
  • @Pratit Desai

Let me clear your doubts. What Sadik is trying to say is if you buy a Rs.200/- pack, you get 250MB for 30 days ie one month right? Say you have not used your Photon that much this month and you have only used up 150MB out of the 250MB which you get. So now if you recharge your prepaid Photon+ on the 29th day with a 200MB pack, then you get 250MB plus the 100MB that you have not used up the previous month. So now you will get 250MB + 100MB(leftover one) = 350MB for another 30 days.

    Hope this clarifies your doubt.

Now the question comes for Sadik. I just want to know how to get the balance of the prepaid Photon+ checked? Got any idea? I want to know is there any website or any number that I can dial. I don't want to call their customercare and all for knowing my balance.
  • Yes Pratit, Subhankar is absolutely right. That's what I meant. To add to his example, if you don;t recharge by the 30th day, you will lose your 100 MB balance. I hope it's clear now.

    @Subhankar

There is no other way than calling their Customer Care Number 1800-266-121. I specifically asked them if there was any method by SMS or Website and their Customer Care said that "As of now, we do not yet have that facility." I end up making a call to their customer care once every week to find out.

Additionally there is the Statistics option in the Huawei Access Manager after you log in, which gives you an indication of how much data usage you have done for the current session. So you can get a little bit of idea from there.
  • pratitdesai
I took a new Photon Plus USB Connection today (Prepaid) & they have clarified to me that any balance left out shall not be carried forwarded to next month unlike what you are mentioning here.. And you can check your usage & time logs on www.tataindicom.com & then go to My Account section, Register & then go for it...
  • Sorry Pratit but you are still not getting me.

    1. If you recharge within validity period, your leftover balance gets added till next validity. If you recharge after current validity is over, your balance does not get added. I have been using Photon for two months and my balance has been added because I recharged within validity period.

    2. tataindicom.com does not show balance of Photon Prepaid. It only shows balance of Tata Indicom Broadband. Check it out first. I have been doing this for two months now.
